Crisp Criticism - "Magic Mike", "The Watch", "Step Up Revolution", "Cosmopolis", "Total Recall"

Magic Mike (2012/US)   **

A 30-year-old male stripper in Tampa, Florida takes a 19-year-old boy under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women and making easy money.
Cosy, entertaining, terrifically handled behind-the-scenes yarn, emblematic of the director, who ultimately, gets bogged down by his adherence to the conventions of drugs and violence.

The Watch (2012/US)

A neighbourhood watch made up of four suburban guys discover that their town has become overrun with aliens.
Loud, unfunny, phallic-obsessed farce that goes nowhere new and lays there like a lead balloon.

Step Up Revolution (2012/US)

A girl arrives in Miami with aspirations to become a professional dancer and sparks with the leader of a dance crew whose neighbourhood is threatened by her father's development plans.
The first intolerable feature in a merely uninteresting series of young adult films. This time, even the dancing is sleep-inducing.

Cosmopolis (2012/Canada)

A 28-year-old billionaire rides across Manhattan in a stretch limo in order to get a haircut while he meets with his asset managers.
A huge mistake from both its gifted director and popular star, neither of whom apparently know what the point of it all is. It raises many interesting current questions and then manners itself in verbal and visual masturbation.

Bad, 200-million dollar remake; totally unnecessary.
