5. Moonlight – Mahershala Ali
For his soulful tenderness. I dare you to keep it together during his scene. He haunts the whole film despite being in only the first third of the triptych.
4. 10 Cloverfield Lane – John Goodman
For the year's most imposing, terrifying force. And, somehow, he's still funny. Praise Goodman!
3. Moonlight – Ashton Sanders
For taking on what was, I think, the most difficult of the three parts (or anyone's part, really) and serving back a palpable authenticity. He's a talent to watch.
2. Moonlight – Trevante Rhodes
For such a genuine creation, somehow being able to convey the agitated years we didn't see. We can't help but feel for Chiron.
1. Hail, Caesar! – Alden Ehrenreich
For the year's most guileless performance, even considering how much Doyle is required to do at Capitol Pictures. It is nothing less than stunning to watch him glide through every scene as effortlessly as he does.
Runner Up: Moonlight – Andre Holland
